$1 million Fire Station Debt Exclusion Article
The Ballot Question
"Shall the Town of Maynard be allowed to exempt from the provisions of Proposition two and one-half, so called, the amounts required to pay the principal of interest on the bonds to be issued in a principal amount not to exceed $1,000,000 in order to finance designing, constructing, equipping and furnishing a new fire station at the Rockland Ave. Parcel, provided that the remainder of the total cost of the project, currently estimated in the amount $6,000,000, is fully funded by a grant?"
Second by Selectman Bubier.
Why vote YES?
- Maynard's only shot at ever getting a modern Fire station, valued at $6 million, for only $1 million from Maynard's tax payers ($25 per year based on a $354,000 average property assessment)
- Maynard's financial participation is a requirement of eligibility for Federal Grant money. No financial commitment from Maynard, no grant.
- The $1 million debt exclusion will be contingent upon receiving adequate Federal funding. If no adequate Federal funding is forthcoming then the debt exclusion will not be acted upon.
- It would inexpensively take the need for new fire facilities out of competition with the needs of the schools, or any other project for that matter.
What happens to the Fire Station if I vote no?
- Maynard's Fire Department needs will not go away.
- The more than 50 years old station is:
- a potentially unhealthy work environment
- barely adequate for today's modern apparatus
- in constant need of repair
- unsafe due to tight conditions
- non-compliant to any modern building codes
- in constant need of repair
- the list goes on...
- A new Fire Station will be necessary in 5 to 10 years
- Tax payers will have to foot the entire bill of a new station
- Tax increase to residents would be more than $150 per year at today's Cost estimate and today's dollar value.
No one can predict the future but costs would most likely be higher
